Yet the circumstances the British historian Flora Fraser confronted in writing “The Washingtons,” her largely successful attempt to chronicle the marriage of these storied individuals, were very much like those facing historians who write about more obscure people. Martha lived this very public life with him, garnering enormous respect. It’s hard to imagine two people less marginalized than George and Martha Washington, a couple at the very pinnacle of society in the nation George helped to create. One of the great challenges of setting down the history of marginalized people is how to amass enough information to provide a clear picture of subjects who didn’t write letters themselves or only appeared in the letters of others, who didn’t enter the public realm through the legal system or gain notoriety in other ways.
